Camille Bridges, Miss Capital City 2018
My favorite memory or appearance during my first 90 days was…
My favorite appearance was visiting Ms. Carroll’s first grade classroom. I had the opportunity to share a bit about life as a “princess.” I spoke with them about their dreams and goals. I even learned about their Friday rewards system and what they do to be excellent, ambitious, and courageous students. The smiles that day were priceless.
Something that I want the community to remember about me is…
Underneath the crown, behind the sash and the makeup, it is my goal to make sure that the well-being and needs of others are being met. Despite the challenges that I have faced, I hope to be remembered as one who showed up to the arena with courage and bravery to advocate for the needs of others. Service, style, scholarship, and success is what I pursue when I wake up in the morning each day and either put on my crown or my glasses. Those four points will always be what I pursue whether there is a Miss America crown on the horizon or not. It has been said, “People may forget what you say or do, but they will never forget how you made them feel.” I want people to remember how I made them feel.
Something that I want the community to remember about my platform is…
From organizing Rochelle Middle School’s first Girls On The Run team, to promoting my platform at the City of Kinston Council meeting, to wherever the crown will take me next- I hope to be remembered as someone who led her community to not only be healthy, but to be whole. Additionally, it is very important for my community to remember that it does not take a piece of legislation to reverse childhood obesity. All it takes is a lifestyle commitment from the adults within the community, and a desire to see kids live healthy, active, and whole lives.
Before I give up my crown, my goal is to…
Before I give up my crown, my goal is to visit more classrooms to read and interact with kids and to teach about my platform, Reversing Childhood Obesity. I also desire to meet with the First Lady, Kristin Cooper, and discuss healthy meal ideas for public schools in North Carolina.
To me, Miss America is about…
To me, Miss America is about encouraging women to pursue their best wholistic, well-rounded life. So many women within this organization are so different, yet so many have incredible character traits, skills, education, and backgrounds to bring to the table. Miss America is about celebrating these women and encouraging them to continue to serve and thrive in every area of their community. When I first joined the Miss America Organization, I did not think it was possible for me to potentially be Miss America. The growing process within this program has taught me that it is not always about winning, because there will always only be one crown at the end of the night. It is about, what Teddy Roosevelt once said, “daring greatly.” If we are brave enough, often enough, we will fall. The growing, the rising, comes afterwards!
The best advice I have received while preparing for the state pageant was…
…”let go, and let God.” I have spent so much time practicing, serving, working out, shopping, teaching and learning and now it is time for every seed that has been planted to grow on the Miss North Carolina stage. It is now time to put my best foot forward, to celebrate my achievements, share about my challenges, and courageously present myself on a stage for thousands to see. I have learned that I have no control over the outcome; but I do know that as long as I leave it in God’s hands, I can end the week knowing that His best for me has been fulfilled.
My advice to anyone thinking of competing for a title next year is…
My advice to anyone thinking of competing for a title next year is to just do it! I am here to help in any way that I can. Compete and keep in mind this: you as a women are already beautiful, intelligent, one of a kind, and authentic. Take the opportunity to showcase your true, authentic self and you will succeed!
Anything else we should know about your first 90 days?
My first 90 days have been exponentially more exciting than I ever expected! I am looking forward to what the future holds as Miss Capital City!
