Lauren Walsh, Miss Clayton 2018
My favorite memory or appearance during my first 90 days was…
Hands down, Clayton’s Special Needs Dance was my favorite appearance. I loved dancing and spending time with people who truly didn’t care what other people thought. It was very refreshing to have fun without any pressure of following the status quo. I had a very special dance partner named JC. He had never previously danced at any dances held in Clayton. I went and spoke to him and he said it was because he didn’t like the music. So I said “go request a song and let me know when it comes on, then we can dance.” Then not once but three time I heard an announcement saying “This song has been requested by JC for Miss Clayton.” Each one was a country song and he sang me the words to every one. I’m so excited for the next dance to see all of my new friends.
Something that you should know about my Carolina Princess is…
My Carolina Princess is Named Morgan! She just turned 10 years old, and I have never met some one with more energy! She loves dancing, cheerleading, and softball!
Something that I want the community to remember about me is…
I want my legacy to be: a strong leader and influencer who impacted her community. I have been working hard to encourage volunteerism and be present at as many Clayton events as possible. So far I have hosted a food drive, held a princess party fundraiser, and a fundraiser for RUFF. I’m excited to continue to plan events to raise money and encourage community involvement.
Something that I want the community to remember about my platform is…
I am all about volunteerism. I am a strong believer in leading by example, so being a volunteer in my community is a big part of the job. When people see what you’re doing and how you can help by simply giving an hour of their time- they want to be a part of it. I’m igniting the flame of volunteerism. Because once it starts it can never be put out. I definitely want people to remember I encouraged volunteerism. #sparktheflame #encouragingvolunteerism
Before I give up my crown, my goal is to…
My goal is to raise more scholarship money for the next Miss Clayton, as well as raise money for a scholarship for a Clayton High School graduate next year! The Miss America Program has given me a large amount of scholarship to go towards my education, and I want to help give others that same opportunity.
To me, Miss America is about…
Miss America is about shaping and nurturing the up and coming leaders of our world. It’s about encouraging young ladies to be well rounded; to participate in community efforts to improve our world. Miss America is about more than the on-stage part of competition. Miss America empowers young women.
The best advice I have received while preparing for the state pageant was…
The best advice I received was to give it your all. In the end, only one girl goes home with the crown. If that girl isn’t you and in your heart you know you could have worked harder and put more into it- that will be far worse than not winning the Miss North Carolina Crown.
My advice to anyone thinking of competing for a title next year is…
Do it! This organization is life changing. Even if you’ve never competed in something like this before. I didn’t win my first pageant. I actually didn’t win the first 6 pageants I was in. But I learned leadership, determination, communication skills, and confidence. This program will help you whether or not you go home with the crown. It changed my life for the better and it can change yours too.
